BS EN ISO 9001:2026 — What Changed and What To Do

BS EN ISO 9001:2026 is an evolutionary revision that strengthens leadership accountability for quality culture, separates risk from opportunity thinking, and introduces Annex A with clarifications, with the final draft now available ahead of publication in Autumn 2026.

What is BS EN ISO 9001:2026?

BS EN ISO 9001:2026 is the latest revision of the international quality management system requirements standard. It applies to any organisation seeking to demonstrate consistent quality, customer confidence and continual improvement, across all sectors from manufacturing and healthcare to digital services and public sector delivery.

What changed?

  • Renewed emphasis on quality culture and ethical behaviour – leadership is now explicitly expected to demonstrate ethical conduct, open communication and commitment to continual improvement, raising accountability for senior leaders.
  • Risk and opportunity are now treated separately – opportunity-based thinking is strengthened as a distinct driver of resilience, innovation and growth, beyond the previous risk-based thinking focus.
  • Climate change context already added – the 2024 amendment that inserted climate change within organisational context is carried forward, reinforcing that quality management cannot operate in isolation from environmental expectations.
  • New Annex A provides clarifications – for the first time, the standard includes a substantial informative annex that explains the structure, terminology and intent of requirements, reducing ambiguity for both new and experienced users.
  • Core requirements remain largely unchanged – the revision is evolutionary; the operational impact on existing certified organisations is expected to be minimal, but the focus shifts from process compliance to how effectively the system is used in practice.

What should you do?

  • Review your leadership review records and top management engagement – ensure your leaders can demonstrate visible, active commitment to quality culture, ethical behaviour and continual improvement, not just endorsement of objectives.
  • Update your risk and opportunity register – separate your treatment of risks from opportunities, and verify that opportunity-based thinking is embedded in your strategic planning and improvement activities.
  • Assess your change management procedure – ensure that changes to the quality management system are communicated effectively and evaluated for effectiveness, as the revision strengthens expectations around change communication.
  • Examine your internal audit programme – audit criteria should now reflect the broader leadership and culture expectations, and the clarifications in Annex A can help auditors interpret requirements more consistently.
  • Use the FDIS to perform a gap analysis of your quality manual and documented procedures – compare your current documentation against the revised requirements, focusing on leadership accountability, opportunity management and the new Annex A clarifications.
