AAMA 501.2 Water Penetration Field Check

What the field check covers
AAMA 501.2 is a field procedure for finding water leaks in installed fixed glazing systems. A calibrated nozzle directs a controlled water stream at the exterior joints while an observer watches the interior for penetration.
It applies to sealed, non-operable assemblies only — fixed glazing, curtain wall, sloped glazing and store front. It is not used on operable windows or doors, where the drainage design means the test would not give a meaningful result.
The check locates defects in installation and sealing. It is a diagnostic tool, not a certification: passing it confirms no leakage was observed at the joints tested, and it does not certify the product.
How it is performed
A calibrated spray nozzle is held at the specified distance from the joint and traversed at the specified rate, applying water at the pressure set by the procedure. Each section of joint is tested in turn while an observer monitors the interior face for water ingress.
Where leakage is found, testing continues in segments to isolate the entry point, so the report identifies the defective joint rather than simply recording a failure.
