Certification schemes do not accept a manufacturer's word that a product is safe. They require test reports, against specified standards, from laboratories the scheme recognises. Product testing generates that evidence — and getting it right the first time is what determines whether certification takes weeks or months.
Testing for market access
Most product testing is commissioned because a scheme demands it. ECAS, G-Mark and SABER each specify which standards apply to a given product category, and each has requirements about where the testing was done and by whom. A report against the wrong standard edition, or from a laboratory the scheme does not accept, is rejected at assessment and the work is repeated.
Because ITMAD carries out the conformity assessment for these schemes, it knows what will be accepted before testing is commissioned rather than after it is submitted. The most common rejection reasons are: wrong standard edition, insufficient sample scope, and laboratory accreditation scope not covering that specific test method.
Test categories
- Electrical safetyInsulation resistance, dielectric strength, earthing continuity, temperature rise, abnormal operation and construction assessment against the applicable IEC and GSO standards for low voltage equipment. Required for ECAS and G-Mark for electrical products.
- Toy safetyMechanical and physical properties, small parts, sharp edges and points, flammability, and migration of restricted elements, against the GSO toy safety technical regulation. Required for G-Mark for toys sold in the GCC.
- Chemical and material testingRestricted substances, heavy metals, phthalates, migration limits and composition verification where the specification sets it. Applies to toys, consumer products and food contact materials.
- Mechanical and performance testingStrength, durability, dimensional conformity and functional performance against the product standard or client specification.
- Energy efficiencyTesting and verification where UAE or GCC labelling requirements apply to the product category.
- Packaging and labelling verificationMarking content, durability and legibility checked against the regulatory requirements of the destination market, including Arabic language requirements where applicable.
How testing is arranged
ITMAD coordinates testing through ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratories, with the report issued by the laboratory under its own accreditation — which is what a certification scheme and a customs authority will want to see. What ITMAD provides is everything around it: identifying which standards and clauses apply, specifying the sample and the test scope, ensuring the laboratory is one the target scheme accepts, and reviewing the resulting report against what the assessment will require.
Testing commissioned without reference to the scheme frequently produces a technically valid report that the scheme will not accept — correct standard, wrong edition; correct test, insufficient sample; correct laboratory, missing accreditation for that specific method. Getting those details right before submission avoids repeating the work.
