Rope access solves an access problem, not an inspection problem. Where a structure would otherwise need scaffolding, a crane-mounted platform or a shutdown, rope access puts a technician on the surface in hours instead of weeks — and the structural inspection that follows is the same inspection, carried out to the same standard, by the same qualified personnel.

How the service is delivered

Rope access work is performed by IRATA-certified teams working to recognised industry practice, with supervision ratios, rescue provision and equipment inspection as the discipline requires. IRATA Level I, II and III technicians are deployed according to the complexity and risk of the access. ITMAD provides the inspection: defining what needs examining and to what criteria, carrying out or directing the examination, and reporting against the governing code or specification.

That combination matters. A rope access technician who is not a qualified inspector produces photographs; a qualified inspector who cannot reach the surface produces nothing. The work is only useful where both are present on the same scope.

Standards and qualifications

NDT carried out by rope access is governed by the same standards as ground-level work: ASME, AWS, ISO and client specifications apply without modification. Technicians hold ISO 9712 or ASNT SNT-TC-1A Level II qualifications in the methods they apply. Rope access teams are certified to IRATA standards. ITMAD is accredited to ISO/IEC 17020 as an inspection body, and reports are issued under that accreditation where the scope falls within it.

When rope access is the right answer

It is the right answer where access is the dominant cost, where the structure cannot take or accommodate scaffolding, where other trades need to keep working beneath, or where the work is short relative to the time it would take to erect and dismantle conventional access. Typical mobilisation is one to two days versus two to four weeks for scaffolding on a flare stack or tank shell.

It is the wrong answer where the surface area is large and continuous, where prolonged close work is needed at every point, or where the environment makes suspension unsafe. Scaffolding or powered access is better in those cases and we will say so rather than sell the harder method.

Coverage

Rope access structural inspection is carried out at industrial facilities, refineries, tank farms, ports and offshore installations across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Fujairah, and on mobilisation across the wider Gulf. Work is scheduled around plant operation, including during shutdowns where the access window is fixed. ITMAD operates from offices in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with direct scheduling in both emirates without subcontracting.
